About Alerion

We produce renewable energy, carefully and respectfully using what nature has to offer, combining technological innovation, wisdom and know-how to produce the energy of the present and the future.

We have over 1GW of installed renewable energy across Europe. Within Wales, Alerion own the consented Foel Trawsnant Wind Farm in Neath Port Talbot CBC, with more projects across Wales, the UK and Ireland currently being developed.

Site Location

The Mynydd Tryfan Wind Farm is proposed on the Conwy/Denbighshire border in north Wales. The site is located 3.km east of Llansannan and 7.7km west of Denbigh, occupying 145 hectares. Currently, the site is used predominantly for sheep grazing and is classified as grade 5: very poor-quality agricultural land, according to The Agricultural Land Classification (ALC).

The site itself is open, with limited trees and foliage, with land sloping from the east to the west with around a 100-meter difference between the highest and lowest points of the site.

The land surrounding the site is primarily of a rural and agricultural nature, with dry stone walls, hedgerows and fences. To the north, east, and west the area is predominantly agricultural. Directly to the south the area is heathland and not used for agriculture.

Proposals

Our proposal comprises up to five turbines with a maximum height-to-tip of 180 metres, generating around 24 megawatts of energy. The site would include other associated infrastructure, including a substation, on-site access tracks, site access and temporary construction compounds. The whole site is located within Pre-Assessed Area for Wind 1.

The wind farm would be designed to enable agricultural uses to continue, where it is safe to do so within the site boundary, therefore allowing dual use of the land. Additionally, at the end of the wind farm’s operational life, the site would be restored to full agricultural use.

While we do have a proposed grid connection, details on this will be confirmed by the National Energy System Operator (NESO). Further information about the proposed method of transmitting power to the grid will be provided at a later date by NESO and Scottish Power Manweb (SPM).

Why is this wind farm needed?

The site would contribute to the Welsh Government’s current target to generate all energy from renewable sources by 2035 and would provide clean, homegrown energy at a time of energy insecurity across the globe.

Community Benefits

Mynydd Tryfan Wind Farm represents a multi-million-pound investment and would result in job creation during both the construction and operational phases of the development.

Alerion is committed to delivering local community benefits of £5,000 per installed megawatt of energy from the wind farm per year – approximately £120,000 each year for Mynydd Tryfan Wind Farm.

What happens next?

We’re still developing our proposal  and we’re keen to work with the local community to help shape our planning application.

We are currently developing our proposals and undertaking surveys, which means we do not yet have plans to share.

Once this process has been completed, we will undertake consultation with the local community to find out their insights about the area and views on the proposals.
